Thai Airways travel vouchers can now be redeemed or used with the extended expiry date of December 31, 2023

There have been some developments with Thai Airways and travel vouchers the company previously issued to travelers who were unable to travel due to the pandemic (and TG no longer flies).

Those who previously agreed to have the value of their booking converted into a travel voucher rather than immediately requesting a cash refund now have the option to request a refund nonetheless (within two years).

Additionally, Thai Airways has extended the expiration date of these vouchers to December 31, 2023 to provide more flexibility for those who still choose to keep the vouchers.

You can access the Thai Airways website with instructions here.

Refund your THAI travel voucher.

From July 1, 2022, customers can apply for reimbursement of their THAI Travel Voucher via online registration Click here.

1. After submitting the refund, you will receive an automated email to acknowledge your travel voucher refund request.

2. THAI will process the refund in sequential order no later than March 31, 2024.

3. While waiting for the refund, if you want to use the travel voucher, you can make a reservation through www.thaiairways.com before December 31, 2023. Any remaining value will be refunded to you by March 31, 2024 as stipulated in the business recovery plan.

So the good news is that you can now get your money back. The bad news is that it will take another two years (or until two years, but better prepare for the worst) in order to receive the funds.

This is a solution that THAI has offered in its business recovery plan to at least offer something to passengers who have been burned by the airline failure.

The other option is to just keep the voucher and use it.

Redeem your THAI travel voucher.

THAI is pleased to extend its validity until December 31, 2023. For customers holding a travel voucher, the validity will be automatically extended without the need to contact us directly.

Simply follow the instructions below on how to use your THAI Travel Voucher to make your next booking.

THAI Travel Voucher Use Period: February 18, 2022 – December 31, 2023

Here are some instructions on how to apply your travel voucher to a reservation:

Keep in mind that you can book flights up to a year before the actual travel date.

For someone planning to travel both ways, I say (and have said this before) that requesting and using the travel voucher is the best and easiest way to use and keep the funds that THAI owes you.

It would be very cumbersome to track your refund for years, keep in mind that we are already two years into the pandemic and TG has stopped most of its international services.

To be fair, we also have to take into account that THAI has started regular flights again since late last summer (2021) when the Sandbox model started and as of January 2022 quarantine has been dropped entirely .

With a little flexibility no one really had to lose their money unless they flat out refused to fly or couldn’t make Thailand work. In any case, receiving a voucher from a carrier that was practically fried and filed for reorganization in bankruptcy court is much more than many other passengers have received whose airline has went bankrupt.

Conclusion

Thai Airways is now offering holders of previously issued travel vouchers a refund to be processed until March 2024. The other option is to continue using the voucher and TG has updated the expiry date to be valid until December 31, 2023. Any remaining value (if any) will be refunded to the passenger no later than March 31, 2024 as stipulated in the company’s recovery plan.

Usually, I would always advocate requesting a cash refund, either through chargebacks or other means. If that turns out to be complicated or impossible, try the next best thing and a travel voucher wouldn’t be the worst possible option. Especially for a mainstream airline like THAI. Luckily, people didn’t lose every penny with Thai Airways coming out of this “reorganization” and it was still unlikely that TG would go completely bankrupt.

At the very least, a new company would have been formed overnight and resumed operations, but such deals tend to burn a lot of customer goodwill if people get too burned. The way it is currently run is the right thing to do.
