Many face the car rental nightmare when traveling

Consumers are paying about $40 a day more than in 2019, according to AAA. This is in addition to a limited supply and high demand.

SAN DIEGO – This summer, many Americans are venturing out into the world by traveling. But many who seek escape find themselves blocked trying to rent a car.

Big car rental companies like Hertz and Enterprise are struggling to keep up with strong consumer demand.

Earlier this year, Gaby Rodriguez booked her flight to San Diego from Florida. She says she knew she would need a car to get around as she planned to make it a road trip.

“So I couldn’t just rely on public transport. But when I found myself looking for this car, I couldn’t find anything available,” Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez tried to book the car rental with Enterprise, only to find there were no cars available for the date she needed them.

“I had to find other ways to get around that were also expensive and not everyone can afford,” Rodriguez added.

The low supply does not only affect those who travel for holidays, but also for business and unplanned trips.

If you are able to find a car, chances are it will come with a price. According to AAA, consumers are paying around 40% more per day for rentals than in 2019.

In a statement to CBS, 8 Hertz said the following:

Hertz is working closely with our automotive partners to add new vehicles to our fleet, purchasing low mileage used vehicles and moving vehicles to areas of greatest demand to support our customers during the ongoing microchip shortage. which continues to have an impact on the car. rental sector.

We are seeing strong demand this summer, especially in tourist destinations such as San Diego, California. We advise customers to book as early as possible and at the same time they make other travel arrangements. Another tip is to consider booking at a neighborhood car rental agency which may have more availability when airport volumes are high. Hertz has thousands of neighborhood locations across the country.”

In the case of Pietro Galli, who travels frequently for business, he says he’s tried several places and still couldn’t find a rental car, even though he tried to book ahead.

“I tried to book at every Hertz location in the area, which I’m talking about over 7 locations – none available,” Galli said.

In a statement to CBS 8, Enterprise said the following:

“Enterprise Rent-A-Car, National Car Rental, and Alamo Rent A Car are seeing strong demand for car rental vehicles throughout the busy summer season. Likewise, with more people driving to their destinations, resulting in more people on the road, we continue to see an increase in the number of people needing rental to temporarily replace their personal vehicle.

While we have seen a significant improvement in the availability of our fleet year over year, a major challenge at present continues to be the global chip shortage and other supply chain constraints that have an impact on all industries, including the availability of new cars. However, our teams work closely with our manufacturing partners to continually add new vehicles to our fleet to meet the most critical transportation needs of our customers, insurers and business partners.

It is essential to reserve a vehicle as early as possible for future travel. We also encourage people to check if their desired reservation is unavailable as travel plans and reservations change often, and reservations may become available. Additionally, providing flexible branch pick-up dates and locations in your search can help increase your options. To help streamline booking, has a feature that allows customers to be redirected to other nearby options – if available – during the online booking process when they book if the option selected is not available. shows no vehicle availability.“said a company representative.

Both Rodriguez and Galli say more needs to be done to ensure customer needs are met.

“If rental cars are such a problem, then public transport must be much more reliable than it is now. And that’s not the case in many parts of the county,” Rodriguez added.
